Fashion for the Stage

Monika von Zallinger Costume Drawings

Fashion for the Stage features neraly 100 of a total of 400 drawings donated by the artist to the Theater museum in 2021. Wheter sumo wrestlers in gold hoods, dancers with swinging legs, or 1920s bathers on the catwalk, the arrangement of the figures in the large scale costume designs is imposing"Frieze-like" juxtaposed, they sometimes appear classical and statuesque, sometimes dynamic and playful. They are the result of a well as the drape of the fabrics are copied from nature, but there are no limits to the imagination when it comes to the cuts and colors of the costumes, because "its all theater!" as the artist says about her costume design work.

Based on Zallinger's work for 13 domestic and foreign productions, including Arthur Schnitzler's Reigen (Theater in der Josefstadt, Vienna, 1989), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Marriage of Figaro (Semperoper, Dresden, 1995), Tankred Dorst's Schattenlinie (Akademietheater, Vienna, 1995), and Paul Engel's contemporary opera Daniel (Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich, 1994), the exhibition conveys the creative power of drawing as a graphic design medium.

 

 

Biography - Monika von Zallinger

Born in 1940 in Munich, Monika von Zallinger grew up in Salzburg, Vienna, and Munich and studied with Helmut Jürgens at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. She initially assisted at the Bayerische Staatsoper, and was then engaged by the Landestheater Salzburg. After some time at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, where she was responsible for stage design and costumes, she decided to work as a freelance artist. Career stations included the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, the Münchner Kammerspiele as well as various German stages in Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig, and Essen. In Vienna, she worked for the Burgtheater, the Theater in der Josefstadt, the Theater an der Wien, and the Volksoper. She was also internationally active in Amsterdam, Athens, Basel, Bern, Milan, Trieste, Venice, and Zurich. She was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honour of the Federal State of Vienna in 2000.
